We believe that partnering with churches provides a unique opportunity to practically address poverty one neighborhood at a time.
Churches bring the value of service, location, experienced leadership, a great communication system and the ability to support people in a variety of life situations. And these are the very same assets that give local churches the potential to effectively address poverty issues and bring about positive change in their community.
Metro believes the local church is one of the most under-utilized resources in the country.
In the Bible, Christians are commanded to indiscriminately love and serve everyone, and especially the poor, the outsider, and the orphan. This, coupled with the fact that there are churches in nearly every neighborhood in America, makes the local church a potentially powerful and highly influential place in each community.
Yet, sadly, the local church is dying. Every year, thousands of churches across the country are facing financial crisis and are being forced to shut their doors. And the churches that are still around are standing empty five days a week.
Part of the problem is that most churches don’t know how to connect with their own communities, much less how to address the overwhelming problems in our society that are often caused by poverty.
The other part of the problem is that people just aren’t going to church anymore. The younger generations, especially, are leaving in droves mostly because they are disenchanted with the church. They are eager to be the church instead of just going to church. They long for a community of prayer, truth, love, justice, and mission.
How Metro Can Help
To survive and flourish in the 21st century, we believe that the local church must become an extension of God’s love to people not just within its four walls, but also out in the world. And we want to help churches to do just this.
We partner with faith-leaders and pastors to help them activate their church for service. We do this by providing them with the education, resources, and tools needed for them to address their community’s unique needs.
We’ve partnered with over 50 churches over the last 50 years. And our goal is to partner with even more churches in 2017, with the goal of helping them strengthen and increase their capacity to serve their community and better help impoverished people.
